Modern engine tuning is primarily a matter of adjusting parameters governing the electronic engine management system.  The expertise is in knowing  what the effect of adjusting the parameters will be and most importantly what combinations might prove fatal to the engine.

To adjust the on-board engine management programming you need to be able to connect to it through the Ford diagnostics port.  A few companies provide interface systems but the most recommended appears to be from SCT who both sell direct and through value added resellers (VAR).

Looking through the forums I selected Hypnotic Illusions Automotive as my VAR.

May 23rd: Installed program Hypnotic Custom tune (92 octane).  It was quite straight forward.  You plug the cable into the port and follow the instructions.  There are parameters you can use to change spark (timing), fuel and other items which are best left alone unless you have a dyno to see your results.  I was concerned that as only 91 octane fuel is available locally that this would be a problem but Hypnotic confirmed that the 92 octane tune is good for a 91-93 octane range.

The tune increases the rev limiter, removes the speed limiter, adjusts the fuel on wide open throttle (WOT) and I think adjusts the throttle response (need to check that).  There maybe many other changes but these are the most obvious.

The affects of the tune were most noticeable in throttle response.  Now a small amount of throttle push produces a much larger increase in revs.  At current power (~133 hp at the wheels) this is a welcome change.  As more power (>175hp) becomes available this may need some review.

A dyno comparison shows some improvement in spark and fuel/air producing only very slight improvements.  However, with the tune and with wide open throttle conditions the car now feels generally more willing.

Conclusion

If you are going to make changes to your car then you'll need a programming tool (like the SCT).  Most tuner services (which have a dyno) will usually sell you the tool along with some time on the dyno. If you can find a local tuner to provide this combined service for you choose that option.  I think Hypnotic did a very good job producing a generic tune for making best use of 91 octane fuel with a stock configuration.  I will be interested to learn if Hypnotic have a revised tune for a Cosworth cold air intake equipped car.  Even if they don't armed with the SCT and access to a dyno the small changes required to get the most of of the car will be possible.
